YUMA, AZ – Arizona Western College Head Football Coach Tom Minnick announced Tuesday that former Cibola Raiders kicker Edgar Gastelum has signed his letter of intent to play for Arizona Western College in 2014.
Gastelum; ranked as the number one kicker in the state of Arizona and the 20th best incoming freshman kicker according to Kohl’s Kicking Camps had another stellar season in his senior year at Cibola High School. He missed just four PAT’s all season and just one field goal.
For his high school career, Gastelum went 104-for-111 in PAT’s and was 7-for-10 on field goals, with his longest traveling 52 yards.
Gastelum also handled the punting duties for Cibola and attempted 45 punts in his final two years for a total of 1,569 yards which comes out to an average of 34.87 yards per punt. He pinned 11 punts inside the 20 yard line and had his longest punt travel 64 yards.
“Our special teams really struggled last season, as was evident in the Fisher Automotive El Toro Bowl,” said AWC head coach Tom Minnick. “Edgar brings a lot to the table on special teams because he can kick from distance, handle kickoffs and put the other team in bad starting field position with his punts.”
After a rough loss to New Mexico Military Institute in the Fisher Automotive El Toro Bowl, the Matadors will kick-off their 2014 campaign back at home against those same New Mexico Military Institute Broncos at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Saturday August 23rd. Kickoff time is TBD.
