MATADORS NEWS & ANNOUNCEMENTS

March Student-Athlete: Samantha Mendoza
Derek Diesner
Mar. 1st, 2014

YUMA, AZ Head women’s softball coach Nikki Bethurum and her staff, are proud to recognize outfielder/infielder Samantha Mendoza as the March Student-Athlete of the Month from the Lady Matadors softball team here at Arizona Western College.  Mendoza was chosen for this award because of her excellence both in the classroom and on the softball diamond.

20 year old Samantha Mendoza hails from Fresno, California where she attended Washington Union High School. Mendoza came to AWC to major in Kinesiology in hopes of eventually getting her PH.D in Physical Therapy so that she one day can start her own practice.

“I chose AWC because it felt like a place where I could fit in,” said Mendoza. “The softball program seemed great! The coaching staff and the team showed great personalities both on and off of the field.”

Even though Mendoza is one of the few returning players for the Lady Matadors this season, her favorite moment at AWC happened just a month ago!

“The best moment on the field had to be when I hit back-to-back homeruns in the CSN Tournament in Las Vegas earlier this season,” said Mendoza. “The best moment off the field here at AWC is our team dinners, they are always interesting!”

Mendoza has had some enjoyable times here at Arizona Western College, but she understands what this award truly means and she appreciates even more the scholarship that she was awarded with to come here for college.

“An AWC Scholarship means a lot because it allows me to play the sport that I love,” said Mendoza. “It also opens up many opportunities for me to exceed in my education.”

“Sam is very deserving of this award! She works very hard in the classroom to keep her grades up in preparation for PT school,” said head coach Nikki Bethurum. “On the field she is always looking for ways to make herself a better player.”

For the month of April, we will check in with AWC head baseball coach Drew Keehn to see who his student-athlete of the month is. The chosen athlete will be announced on Tuesday April 1st online on the AWC Matadors athletics homepage.
