THATCHER, AZ – The Matador women’s basketball team saw their season come to an abrupt end on Wednesday evening in Thatcher to the Eastern Arizona Lady Gila Monsters by a final of 63-61 in overtime.
With the loss, the AWC Matadors end their season with a mark of 19-12 overall and 15-7 in ACCAC play, while Eastern Arizona improves to 23-7 overall and 16-6 in ACCAC play.
The first half was a defensive battle between the Lady Gila Monsters and the Matadors. At the half, AWC led 25-18 while shooting 33% from the field. Eastern Arizona struggled even more shooting just 4-of-29 from the field for 13.8%.
In the second half, the Lady Gila Monsters turned the corner and outscored the Matadors by seven while shooting 37.5% from the field.
After regulation the game was even at 53 apiece setting up a do-or-die overtime. In the OT, Eastern got a few calls to go there way, but late in the period, Samantha Wallace banked in a three-pointer with under ten seconds to go to tie the game at 61. Eastern drove down court and with time expiring forced up a shot from around the foul line when a foul was whistled on Jazmin Strane with 1.3 seconds left in overtime.
Strane fouled Ebony Cooper; Eastern’s best free-throw shooter. Cooper knocked down both free-throws and AWC couldn’t get a shot off before the buzzer giving Eastern the win.
The Matadors were led in scoring by Samantha Wallace who finished the evening with 17 points and 14 rebounds.
