YUMA, AZ – The Arizona Western College Matador women’s basketball team closed out their regular season Friday night with a blow-out victory at Tohono O’odham and have continued their dominance with numerous awards throughout the ACCAC and Region 1.
On Saturday, the Matador women’s basketball team received news that both forward Samantha Wallace and Stephanie Schmid had been selected for numerous postseason teams based on their accomplishments from this regular season.
Wallace earned 1st Team All-ACCAC and 1st Team All-Region 1 in Division 1. Guard Stephanie Schmid was placed on the 3rd Team All-ACCAC and the 2nd Team All-Region 1 for Division 1.
“It’s always good to get this kind of recognition,” said AWC head coach Patrick Cunningham. “Samantha has been here before, but to get a freshman like Stephanie Schmid on the list is a great thing. Steph has been more and more consistent for our team as each game goes on and to see her improvement from the start of the season until now says a lot about the kind of player she is.”
Wallace finished the regular season averaging a little over 14 points a game and 10 rebounds per contest. Schmid finished up the regular season averaging 14 points and about four rebounds per game.
Up next for the Matador women is the Region 1 Semi-Finals game which will be played this Wednesday at 7:30pm at Eastern Arizona College in Thatcher. The Matadors split with the Lady Gila Monsters this season, with each team winning on their homecourt. If you can’t make the game in person, you can hear the game live on 560 KBLU-AM with our pre-game coverage getting underway at 7:20pm.
