YUMA, AZ – The Arizona Western College Lady Matadors swept yet another conference opponent, this time the Mesa Lady Thunderbirds by finals of 10-2 and 9-1; both in a final six-innings on Saturday afternoon.
With the victories, the Lady Mats are now 10-2 overall and a perfect 8-0 in ACCAC play. With the losses, Mesa falls to 1-11 overall and 1-11 in conference play.
In game one, Mesa struck first for two runs in the top of the second inning. It was the lone lead they would have for the day. AWC would respond with a run of their own in the bottom half of the second inning and then tacked on five more runs to take the lead for good in the bottom of the third. The Lady Mats took game one by a final of 10-2 behind a perfect 3-for-3 offensive output by Bethany Olea with 4 RBI’s.
Ashlee Rex (4-2) picked up the victory as she tossed a complete game and allowed just two runs, one earned on three hits with two strikeouts and one walk.
Game two was much of the same story for the Lady Matadors as they struck for three early runs in the first two innings and never looked back. The game ended after a Bethany Olea grand slam in the bottom of the sixth inning which put the “run-rule” in effect.
Pitcher Hayley Miller (5-0) tossed a complete game allowing just one run on three hits with three strikeouts and just two walks.
“Our bats were not as strong as they have been the past few weeks, so it was nice to see two strong pitching performances from Ashlee and Hayley,” said AWC head coach Nikki Bethurum. “We also played good defense behind them!”
The Lady Mats will next be in action this Tuesday for day five of their six day homestand. On Tuesday AWC will host fellow ACCAC member, the Glendale Lady Gauchos. First pitch is scheduled for 12 noon and as always, admission is FREE!
