Feb. 12th, 2014

YUMA, AZ – The Arizona Western College Matadors defeated the South Mountain Cougars by a final of 81-65 Wednesday night at “The House” in Yuma.

With the victory, the AWC Matadors improve to 21-6 overall and 15-4 in ACCAC play, while South Mountain falls to 11-15 overall and 7-12 in ACCAC play.

The Matadors were out to avenge their loss Saturday to Phoenix and did just that Wednesday evening. After a sloppy start, the Matadors locked in and scored 45 points and took a 10 point lead into halftime following a last second three-pointer by EJ Twyman.

AWC stayed focused and battled hard in the second half but outscored South Mountain by just six points on their way to an 81-65 victory.

The Matadors dressed just eight players but were led once again by the hot shooting of their guards. EJ Twyman led all scorers with 24 points on 8-of-18 shooting. Five Matadors scored in double-digits, including Brandon Lovings who is returning from an ankle injury. Lovings finished his night with 16 points and six rebounds on 8-of-11 shooting.

South Mountain was led in scoring by forward Monard Brown who tallied 20 points and four rebounds in the loss.

The Matadors season long five game homestand concludes with a conference re-match against the Mesa Thunderbirds on Saturday evening at “The House.” It will be Sophomore Night and the regular season home finale for the Matadors. The women tip off at 5:30pm, followed by the men at 7:30pm. Both games can be heard and seen live on 560 KBLU-AM and on AWC-TV with our pre-game coverage beginning at 5:20pm on radio only.
