YUMA, AZ – The Arizona Western College Matadors defeated the South Mountain Lady Cougars Wednesday evening by a final of 78-33 at “The House” in Yuma.
With the victory, the AWC Matadors improve to 18-9 overall and 14-5 in ACCAC play, while South Mountain falls to 7-20 overall and 6-13 in ACCAC play.
The Matadors controlled the pace throughout Wednesday’s game as they held a 45-16 advantage over the Lady Cougars going into halftime. In the first half alone, guard Stephanie Schmid led the Matadors in scoring with 14 points of 6-of-15 shooting.
In the second half, the Matadors relaxed a bit, but still managed to outscore South Mountain 33-17. Stephanie Schmid ended the game with a game high 20 points on 8-of-23 shooting with eight rebounds.
Forward Samantha Wallace made her return for the Matadors after dealing with an ear infection that last couple of games. Wallace scored 10 points with 12 rebounds in her close to twenty minutes of action off of the bench.
South Mountain played with just seven active players and were led in scoring by Sydney Mullings who had 11 points and 11 rebounds.
The Matadors close out this five game homestand on Saturday against Mesa, which will be Sophomore Night and the regular season home finale for the Matadors inside of “The House.” The game will begin at 5:30pm and can be seen and heard live on AWC-TV and on 560 KBLU-AM.
