YUMA, AZ – For the first time this season, freshman guard Stephanie Schmid from the Matador women’s basketball team has won the ACCAC Division-One Player of the Week award.
“We are happy to see Steph get recognized with this award,” said head coach Patrick Cunningham. “She really stepped up for us since we were without our leading scorer Samantha Wallace. Stephanie helped us not only with her scoring but also with her defense at the other end of the court.”
Schmid helped lead the Matadors to a pair of victories in crucial games against Cochise and Phoenix. Schmid finished the week averaging 19.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, and two steals a game.
Last Wednesday, the Matadors defeated Cochise in what felt like a playoff game by a final of 63-55. AWC then hosted Phoenix College and defeated the Lady Bears by a final of 65-53 to improve their overall record to 17-9 overall and 13-5 in ACCAC play.
Schmid and her teammates will have yet another busy week as they host South Mountain on Wednesday and Mesa on Saturday to close out their home schedule for the season. Saturday will also be Sophomore Night, where head coach Patrick Cunningham will honor his three sophomores who will take the floor for the final time inside of “The House.” Both games will begin at 5:30pm this week and can be seen and heard live on AWC-TV and on 560 KBLU-AM.
