YUMA, AZ – The Arizona Western College Matadors defeated the Phoenix College Lady Bears Saturday evening by a final of 65-53 at “The House” in Yuma.
With the victory, the AWC Matadors improve to 17-9 overall and 13-5 in ACCAC play, while Phoenix falls to 10-16 overall and 6-12 in ACCAC play.
The first half was a battle between the two ACCAC foes with Phoenix getting the better of the Matadors. The Lady Bears went into the break with a seven point lead as they shot 46% from the field in the first half. The Lady Mats struggled shooting just 29% from the field while only connecting for one three pointer.
The second half was a different story as the Matadors held Phoenix to just eight made shots; no of which were a three pointer. The Mats outscored the Lady Bears 40-21 and made their second half free throws count.
In the end, the Matadors walked out of their gym with a 12 point victory to complete the season sweep of Phoenix College. The Lady Matadors were led in scoring by Stephanie Schmid who tallied 19 points on 5-for-10 shooting with six rebounds.
The Matadors season long five game homestand continues, when they take on the South Mountain Lady Cougars on Wednesday inside of “The House.” The women tip off at 5:30pm and the game can be heard and seen live on 560 KBLU-AM and on AWC-TV with our pre-game coverage beginning at 5:20pm on radio only.
