Lady Matadors Sweep GateWay

YUMA, AZ Ė The Arizona Western College Lady Matadors won their first conference games in 2014 by defeating GateWay College by finals of 11-7 and 7-1 in Thursday afternoonís ACCAC doubleheader in Yuma.
With the victory, the AWC Lady Matadors improve to 4-2 overall and 2-0 in ACCAC play, while GateWay falls to 1-2 overall and 0-2 in ACCAC play.
In game one on Thursday afternoon, the Lady Matador bats came out swinging to the tune of 11 runs on 14 hits enroute to an 11-7 victory over the Lady Geckos. The Lady Mats were led offensively by Bethany Olea, who finished 3-for-4 with three RBIís in the leadoff spot.
Hayley Miller (2-0) picked up the win for AWC, as she went all seven innings while allowing seven runs, only five earned on nine hits with four strikeouts.
GateWay was led offensively by their 3-4-5 hitters who went a combined 7-for-11 with all seven RBIís and five runs scored.
Lady Geckoís starter Analicia Olguin took the loss as she allowed five runs in just two plus innings of work.
Game two was much of the same for the Lady Matadors as they struck for seven runs and held GateWay to just one run.
AWC starter Ashlee Rex (1-2) went the distance to win her first game of the season, as she allowed just one unearned run on six hits with three strikeouts.
The Lady Matadors were led by Robyn Alvara who went 2-for-3 with three RBIís and two runs scored. Summer Ehrig, Breeya Howells and Samantha Mendoza all recorded two hits apiece.
The Lady Mats will next be in action this Tuesday for day two of their six day homestand. On Tuesday AWC will host the Chandler-Gilbert Lady Coyotes. First pitch is scheduled for 12noon and as always, admission is always FREE.
