YUMA, AZ – The Arizona Western College Matadors won with a last second three-pointer by guard Ron Lee against Cochise by a final of 70-67 Wednesday night at “The House” in Yuma.
With the victory, the AWC Matadors improve to 20-5 overall and 14-3 in ACCAC play, while Cochise falls to 11-14 overall and 6-11 in ACCAC play.
The Matadors led early and often in the first half before letting Cochise get close. AWC took just a one point lead at 31-30 going into halftime.
The Apaches and Matadors kept it close once again in the second half with AWC outscoring Cochise by just two points. The Apaches tied the game at 67 with less than 35 seconds on the clock and the Matadors elected to play out the final possession. Anthony Alston found Ron Lee in the corner in front of the AWC bench to knock down the game winning three-pointer with just 1.9 seconds on the clock. Cochise quickly got the ball inbounds and gave it a full-court heave that bounced off the rim but didn’t fall giving the Matadors the late victory.
“What a finish,” said head coach Charles Harral. “Anthony did a good job of finding Ron and the rest is history.”
Leading the Matadors offensively Wednesday night was guard Ali Faruqbey who scored 18 points on 6-of-7 shooting off of the bench. Cochise’s leading scorer Wednesday night was Jordan Martin who tallied 28 points on 10-of-20 shooting.
