YUMA, AZ – The Arizona Western College Matadors defeated the Cochise Lady Apaches Wednesday evening by a final of 63-55 at “The House” in Yuma.
With the victory, the AWC Matadors improve to 16-9 overall and 12-5 in ACCAC play, while Cochise falls to 15-9 overall and 10-7 in ACCAC play.
The Matadors came into the game Wednesday evening down two of their best players in Samantha Wallace and Jameela McCarthy due to illnesses, but that didn’t matter as they outscored Cochise 30-23 in the first half.
“This was a must win game for us and we got it done,” said head coach Patrick Cunningham. “We had our backs to the wall playing a quality opponent like Cochise and we were down two players, yet we still found a way to win.”
The Matadors held their own in the second half and outscored Cochise by just a point to take the eight point victory.
AWC was led in scoring by Stephanie Schmid who had 20 points of 8-of-18 shooting with six rebounds. Cochise was led by Aja Hoyle who scored 13 points with three rebounds.
The Matadors continue their season long five game homestand, when they take on the Phoenix College Lady Bears on Saturday inside of “The House.” The women tip off at 5:30pm and the game can be heard and seen live on 560 KBLU-AM and on AWC-TV with our pre-game coverage beginning at 5:20pm on radio only.
