MATADORS NEWS & ANNOUNCEMENTS

February Student-Athlete: Ross Buchman
Derek Diesner
Feb. 1st, 2014

YUMA, AZ – Head men’s basketball coach Charles Harral and his staff, are proud to recognize forward Ross Buchman as the February Student-Athlete of the Month for the men’s basketball team here at Arizona Western College.  Buchman was chosen for this award because of his excellence both in the classroom and on the basketball court.

Born in Redding, California, Buchman decided on continuing his education and growth in the game of basketball at Arizona Western College because he wanted to be a part of something more!

“A scholarship here at AWC means education to me, which is the first stepping stone to my future,” said Buchman.

The freshman forward is unsure of where he wants to continue his education following his time at AWC, however he is interested in majoring in science and hopes to one day become an engineer.

Buchman has made his presence known in his first season as a Matador both offensively and defensively. He currently averages six points a game and has appeared in every game to this point for the Matadors.

“Ross brings a lot of energy to this team,” said AWC head coach Charles Harral. “You can see it in his eyes at all times, that he is willing to do whatever for this team.”

Many people forget that players at this level are students first, and then athletes; but not Ross Buchman.

“A person who is willing to help their school and team in any way possible both on and off the court whether it’s glamorous or not is a true student-athlete in my mind,” said Buchman.

It’s easy to see why the Matador basketball program is so pleased to have Ross on their team this year for what he provides both on and off the court.

“Ross is a true competitor,” said Harral. “You may not see his name at the top of the stat sheet each night, but if you watch the game closely, you will see the impact Ross makes for us night in and night out.”

For the month of March, we will check in with AWC head softball coach Nikki Bethurum to see who her student-athlete of the month is. The chosen athlete will be announced on March 3nd online on the AWC Matadors athletics homepage.
