YUMA, AZ – The Arizona Western College Matadors were upset Saturday night by the Glendale Gauchos by a final of 78-72 at “The House” in Yuma.
With the loss, the AWC Matadors fall to 18-4 overall and 12-2 in ACCAC play, while Glendale improves to 9-8 overall and 6-8 in ACCAC play.
The Matadors shot better from the field in the first half, but could only manage a one point lead going into the break at 34-33 over Glendale.
Glendale however would respond with some quick buckets in the early stages of the second half and keep the game close throughout. However, in the final few minutes the Gauchos took advantage of missed shots by the Matadors and sloppy play to earn an eight point victory over one of the top teams in all of the ACCAC.
The Gauchos shot 44% from the field in the second half, compared to just 38% from the Matadors.
Glendale was led in scoring by Alex Johnson with 24 points on 9-of-16 shooting, to go along with four rebounds. AWC was led by Ali Faruqbey with 18 points on 5-of-21 shooting.
The Matadors hit the road this Wednesday night to take on their rivals, the Eastern Arizona Gila Monsters. The women tip off at 5:30pm, followed by the men at 7:30pm. Both games can be heard live on 560 KBLU-AM with our pre-game coverage beginning at 5:20pm.
