YUMA, AZ – The Arizona Western College Matador men’s basketball team routed the Pima Aztecs 96-76 Saturday night inside of “The House” on the campus of Arizona Western College.
With the victory, the AWC Matadors improve to 15-3 overall and 9-1 in ACCAC play, while Pima drops to 9-9 overall and 4-6 in ACCAC play.
The Pima Aztecs shot 50% from the floor in the first half and yet trailed the Matadors at halftime by a score of 53-40. Arizona Western’s lead was in large part due to their 9-of-16 shooting from behind the three-point arc in the first half. AWC finished the game shooting 52% (15-for-29) from behind the three-point arc.
The second half was a bit closer, but the Matadors still outscored Pima 43-36. Both teams shot over 40% from the field, but the story of the game was three pointers. Pima hit just five in 19 chances.
The Aztecs were led in scoring by Shakir Smith who tallied 34 points on 15-of-32 shooting from the field in just his fourth game with Pima.
The Matadors were led by Ron Lee with 27 point on 9-of-17 shooting. Lee was 7-for-15 behind the three-point line. EJ Twyman had a big night as well with 22 points on 8-of-11 shooting with five rebounds.
The Matadors are right back at it this Wednesday against Tohono O’odham inside of “The House.” Scheduled tip time is 5:30pm for the women and 7:30pm for the men’s game. Both games can be seen and heard live on 560 KBLU-AM and AWC-TV starting at 5:20pm with the Matador basketball pre-game show.
