YUMA, AZ – For the first time this season, freshman guard Ali Faruqbey from the Matador men’s basketball team has won the ACCAC Division-One Player of the Week award.
“We are very happy with Ali’s development as a player and we hope he has continued success throughout this season,” said Arizona Western College head coach Charles Harral.
Faruqbey led Arizona Western to a solid 85-68 victory over Cochise College last Wednesday in Douglas. During that game, he went 7-for-7 from the free-throw line to lead the Matadors to their 10th straight victory.
“I can’t say it enough about how excited we get when our student athletes are recognized by the conference.” said Arizona Western College Athletics Director Jerry Smith. “This says a lot about how the young man is playing this year and how well prepared Ali is for each game thanks to head coach Charles Harral.”
The Matadors have been off since last Wednesday to help with the Fisher Automotive El Toro Bowl and to prepare for finals which are taking place this week across the Arizona Western College campus.
Faruqbey and his teammates will return to the court this Thursday in Phoenix to take on the Bears. Thursday’s game is scheduled to start at 7:30pm; immediately following the AWC and Phoenix women’s basketball game. Both games can be heard live on the radio at 560 KBLU-AM, with our pre-game coverage getting underway at 5:20pm.
