YUMA, AZ – The Arizona Western College Matadors proved to be too strong for their in-state rivals Eastern Arizona Saturday night as they toppled over their cross-state rivals 93-72 Saturday inside of “The House” on the campus of Arizona Western College.
With the victory, the AWC Matadors improve to 8-2 overall and remain a perfect 4-0 in ACCAC play, while Eastern Arizona drops to 6-3 overall and 2-3 in ACCAC play.
The Matadors kept things close with Eastern Arizona in the first half taking a 47-34 lead into the break. Even though AWC was up 13, it didn’t feel like that big of a cushion. The Matadors shot just under 42% from the field in the first half while Eastern Arizona shot 44% from the field.
The second half was very similar to the first half as AWC outscored the Gila Monsters by eight and went on to win by 21. The Matadors were led by Ron Lee with 20 points. Lee was one of six Matadors to record double digits in the point’s category.
Temjae Singleton had his best night of the season scoring 18 points on 6-for-13 shooting and nine rebounds.
In a losing effort, Taylor Stafford led the Eastern Arizona Gila Monsters in scoring with 25 points and three assists.
