YUMA, AZ – The 17th ranked Arizona Western College Matadors came out victorious 66-50 Saturday night against their cross-state rivals, the Eastern Arizona Lady Gila Monsters thanks to a strong second half output.
With the victory, the AWC Matadors improve to 6-1 overall and remain a perfect 4-0 in ACCAC play, while Eastern Arizona drops to 6-1 overall and 3-1 in ACCAC play.
The first half saw both teams struggle Saturday night at “The House” in Yuma. Eastern Arizona shot just 28.6% from the floor while AWC shot 37.5%. The score at halftime was 31-23 in AWC’s favor.
The second half was a different story as the Matadors shot 48% from the floor to just 25.7% from Eastern Arizona to secure a 66-50 victory.
Some alarming stats for Eastern Arizona was their 0-for-15 shooting from behind the three point arc and their star point guard Shaunice Robinson was 3-for-15 from the field. Robinson ended her night with 18 points, 12 of which came at the free throw line.
For the Matadors, they were once again led by sophomore forward Samantha Wallace who had another double-double with 18 points and 18 rebounds. Jazmine Strane chipped in with 13 points and Stephanie Schmid had 12 points.
The Matadors hit the road this Tuesday, as they travel to Coolidge to face Central Arizona. This highly anticipated match-up is scheduled to tip-off at 5:30pm. Tuesday’s game can be heard live on 560 KBLU-AM, beginning with the pre-game show starting at 5:20pm.
