CASPER, WY – The eighth seeded Arizona Western College Lady Matadors won their first game on Friday afternoon against Gadsden State by a final of 3-0. However, later in the day the Lady Matadors were upset by the 13th seeded New Mexico Military Institute Broncos by a final of 0-3.
With the loss, the AWC Lady Matadors season has come to an end with a final overall record of 20-6. The Lady Mats finished conference play this season with a 13-3 record and were the ACCAC, Region 1 and District “C” Champions.
In the first match of the day, the Lady Matadors quickly disposed of the 16th seeded Gadsden State Cardinals 3-0. Final scores were 26-24, 25-13, and 25-23. With the loss, Gadsden State’s season came to an end with a final overall record of 27-9.
The Lady Mats were led by Amber Graham who had nine kills and seven digs and by Abbie Noland who had nine kills and six digs against Gadsden State.
In the second match of the day, the Lady Matadors faced the 13th seeded New Mexico Military Institute Broncos and came out flat as they fell 0-3.
AWC dropped the first set 22-25 in a back and forth battle.
In game two, NMMI started to distance themselves from AWC as they topped the Lady Mats 20-25. In the third set the Broncos jumped on AWC quickly enroute to a 25-17 win. With the win, NMMI advances on to play in the ninth place game Saturday morning.
The Lady Matadors were led by Gabi Dias who tallied eight kills and four digs against New Mexico Military Institute.
“I am really proud of this team and what we accomplished as a group this season,” said head coach Jason Smith.
The Lady Matadors season is over with their final record at 20-6 overall and 13-3 in ACCAC play. The 2014 season will get started next August. In the meantime, don’t forget about the Lady Matadors Holiday Volleyball Camp, which will be held December 16th-18th inside of “The House” on the campus of Arizona Western College.
