CASPER, WY – The eighth seeded Arizona Western College Lady Matadors were upset in their first game in this year’s Division 1 National Championship by the ninth seeded North Idaho Cardinals 0-3. Final scores of each set were 24-26, 22-25, and 17-25.
With the loss, the AWC Lady Matadors fall to 19-5 on the season. With the victory, North Idaho improves to 17-10, as they advance on to face the top seed in Blinn College later this evening in Casper, Wyoming.
AWC looked impressive out of the gates, scoring first on a Gabriel Dias smash. The first set went back and forth the entire time as North Idaho and the Lady Matadors were evenly matched. In the end, North Idaho came away with a comeback 26-24 victory.
The second set was led by North Idaho throughout. The Lady Matadors made a comeback to draw within striking distance, thanks to the excellent work from Abbie Noland.
Noland finished the day with five kills and 13 digs. However her big day wasn’t enough for the Lady Matadors as they fell in the second set 25-22.
In the third set, North Idaho jumped out to an early lead and never looked back. The Cardinals received big performances from Larissa Claassen, Allison Meehan, and Leeta Grap on their way to a 25-17 victory to seal the 3-0 sweep of Arizona Western.
The Lady Matadors will continue play in the Division 1 National Championship Tournament in Casper, Wyoming on Friday as they take on the sixteenth seed Gadsden State. First serve is scheduled for 12 noon and can be seen live on NJCAA TV.
