YUMA, AZ – The 12th ranked Arizona Western College Lady Matadors claimed the District C Championship and an automatic berth into the National Championship Tuesday night with a 3-0 victory over Redlands (OK) Community College inside of “The House.” Final scores were 25-18, 25-23, and 25-16.
With the victory, the 12th ranked AWC Lady Matadors improve to 19-4 overall and remain 14-3 in ACCAC play. With the loss, Redlands (OK) closes out their season with a record of 16-18.
Redlands scored the first point of the first set, but from there on out it was all Lady Matadors. AWC defeated the Lady Cougars with ease to the tune of 25-18.
In the second set, both teams buckled down for an intense set. There were a lot of ties and lead changes throughout, before AWC recorded a come from behind 25-23 victory to go up two sets to none.
The Lady Matadors sealed the deal in the third set, knocking off Redlands by a score of 25-16 to complete the 3-0 sweep of the Lady Cougars.
“It feels great, the journey is not over yet and we still got some wins left in this team. We are going to celebrate this victory tonight and work towards those wins tomorrow,” said head coach Jason Smith.
AWC was led by sophomore Abbie Noland who finished with 10 kills and seven digs.
The Lady Matadors now advance to the National Championship Tournament in Casper, Wyoming which begins November 21st and lasts until November 23rd.
