Derek Diesner
Nov. 11th, 2013

YUMA, AZ – The 17th ranked Arizona Western College Lady Matadors had their hands full yet again Monday afternoon, but buckled down to secure a 95-90 victory in double overtime against ACCAC member Chandler-Gilbert.

With the victory, the 17th ranked AWC Lady Matadors improve to 3-1 overall and earn their first conference win of the season 1-0. With the loss, Chandler-Gilbert falls to 0-4 overall and 0-1 in ACCAC play.

It was a battle once again for the Lady Matadors as they had their hands full all afternoon with the Chandler Gilbert Coyotes. After one half of play, AWC lead the Coyotes by a score of 40-37.

“Chandler-Gilbert is a competitive team,” said Lady Matadors head coach Patrick Cunningham.

The second half was just as close, as Chandler outscored the Lady Matadors by three to force overtime. After shooting just 23.5% from the field in the first half, the Coyotes turned things around shooting 38% from the field in the second half.

The first overtime was even throughout as both teams scored 11 points forcing a second overtime.

In the second overtime, the Lady Matadors took over for good and claimed a five point victory.

“It was a challenge tonight, but I am happy we came out with a victory. We have a tough opponent next in Scottsdale and we have to get ready for that test quickly,” said Cunningham.

The Lady Matadors had five players score in double figures and were led by Jazmin Strane’s 22 points.

The Lady Matadors will hit the road for a game against ACCAC foe, the Scottsdale Fighting Artichokes on Wednesday night. The game is scheduled to begin at 5:30pm from Scottsdale and can be heard live on the radio on 560 KBLU-AM, with the pre-game show beginning at 5:20pm. The Lady Matadors will return home to “The House” on Saturday November 23rd at 5:30pm to host the Eastern Arizona Lady Gila Monsters.
