YUMA, AZ – The 17th ranked Arizona Western College Lady Matadors had their hands full Thursday evening with CETYS (MX) Universidad, as they held on to win 53-47.
With the victory, the 17th ranked AWC Lady Matadors improve to 2-1 overall, while CETYS drops to 0-1.
The Lady Matadors struggled out of the gates, falling behind CETYS 4-0. AWC got a few shots to fall following the slow start and drew even with CETYS.
AWC started feeding the ball down low to center Tania Uluheua as the Lady Mats dominated the paint. Uluheau ended her night with 10 points and a pair of assists. AWC as a team, closed out the night with 26 points in the paint.
After taking a lead of 26-18 to the locker-room, AWC looked to build on that in the second half, but never got it going.
CETYS outscored the Lady Matadors 29-27 in the second half, however AWC still won by six points.
Guard Stephanie Schmid who led the Lady Matadors in scoring last weekend in Kansas shot 0-for-8 in the first half and finished her night 0-for-10 with zero points.
The Lady Matadors continue play in the Desert Classic ’13 presented by Chicago Title Agency tomorrow evening as they host the Snow College Lady Badgers. Tip time is scheduled for 5:30pm and tickets are just $5 for the entire day; that’s four games for the price of one.
