November Women’s Soccer Student-Athlete: Carolyn Sosa
Derek Diesner
Oct. 31st, 2013

YUMA, AZ – Head women’s soccer coach Kenny Dale and his staff, are proud to recognize goalkeeper Carolyn Sosa as the November Student-Athlete of the Month for the women’s soccer team.  Sosa was chosen for this award because of her excellence both in the classroom and on the soccer field.

It’s not many times you hear a junior referred to as a freshman in the college ranks, but in the case of Carolyn Sosa, that is what you have. Sosa has spent the last two seasons under the tutelage of Jason Smith with the AWC Volleyball team. When Sosa was told about the opportunity of a women’s soccer team, she jumped at the opportunity to be a part of the team and with that her eligibility started over.

In the NJCAA rules, you are eligible to play a sport for two years. Once your time is up, you can no longer play that sport at another two-year school. However, if you choose to partake in another sport at the JUCO level, you are awarded another two years for the new sport.

The soon to be 21 year old came to Arizona Western College from nearby San Luis High School to major in broadcasting.

“I chose AWC because of the athletics and because I can stay close to home,” says Sosa. “Getting a scholarship here at AWC means that I have the opportunity to finish my education and that I am a stop closer to being who I want to become.”

Following her time at Arizona Western College, Sosa hopes to use her broadcasting degree to become a sports editor.

Sosa has a good idea on what she wants out of life following her time in college and she has no one to thank more than her family.
“I admire my sister Diana because she is the strongest person I know and I owe everything all to her,” said Sosa.

In Carolyn Sosa’s time here at Arizona Western College, she has taken part in many games in two different sports, however if you ask her what her favorite moment has been since she arrived on campus, she would tell you it only happened about a month ago.

“Playing against #1 Paradise Valley College and going into overtime! Off the field, it would be just listening to my team, wanting to keep fighting and motivating one another to keep on fighting until the very end.”

It’s that kind of spirit that helps Sosa to excel not only on the field, but in the classroom as well. It’s easy to see when head coach Kenny Dale and his staff selected Carolyn Sosa as November’s Student-Athlete of the Month for the women’s soccer team.

For the month of December, we will check in with head football coach Tom Minnick to see who his student-athlete of the month is. The chosen athlete will be announced on December 2nd on the AWC Matadors athletics homepage.
