YUMA, AZ – The 12th ranked Arizona Western College Lady Matadors volleyball team led two sets to none, before dropping three straight sets to lose to Central Arizona in their final regular season home game inside of “The House” Wednesday night. Final scores were 25-22, 27-25, 21-25, 22-25, and 15-17.

With the loss, the 12th ranked AWC Lady Matadors drop to 16-4 overall and 12-3 in ACCAC play. With the victory, Central Arizona improves to 16-6 on the season and 11-4 in ACCAC play.

Wednesday night had a different feel to it, the TV cameras were rolling, the radio broadcast was on the air and the fans were packed into “The House” to cheer on the sophomores for one final time in their regular season home finale.

AWC came out aggressive and took the first set by a final score of 25-22, led by the strong play of the six sophomores taking the court for the final time.

Those six sophomores are Auri Diaz, Rachel Rutherford, Amber Graham, Kylee Chun, Abbie Noland, and Taylor Price. All six were honored before the game by head coach Jason Smith and were all announced as the games’ starters.

“The House” was rocking in game two, as the sophomores continued their torrid pace to lead the Lady Matadors to a 27-25 come-from-behind victory over Central Arizona.

However the momentum shifted gears for the third set and beyond as Central Arizona rattled off three straight sets to earn the 3-2 comeback victory. Central Arizona was led by their star freshman Leah Causey who caused trouble up front all night long.

AWC sported pink socks for the final time in support of October being Breast Cancer Awareness month.

The Lady Matadors will now head out on the road to face the Phoenix College Lady Bears this Friday. This will be the first match between these two teams and the regular season finales for both teams as well. The match is scheduled to start at 7pm this Friday November 1st on the campus of Phoenix Community College.
