YUMA, AZ – The Arizona Western College Men’s Soccer team defeated the Glendale Gauchos in a close battle Monday evening by a final of 1-0 at the AWC Soccer Field in the first round of the Region 1 playoffs.
With the win, the Matadors improve to 15-6-1 overall and 13-6-1 in ACCAC play. With the loss, Glendale Community College ends their 2013 season with an 11-8-2 overall record and 11-7-2 in ACCAC play.
The first half came and went with each team have a couple of chances to score, however neither team could find the back of the net.
In the second half, the Arizona Western offense woke up and started to charge up and down the field on a tired Glendale squad.
With less than 20 minutes to go in the game, Jaime Verdin; who earlier in the game received a yellow card, found an open Jordan Evans for the go-ahead goal at 73:51 in the match.
The goal by Evans turned out to be the game winner, as AWC went on to win by a final of 1-0.
“The conditions made the game very difficult tonight. We were able to beat their outside attack and because of that Jordan Evans had an easy tap-in for the lone goal,” said head coach Kenny Dale.
AWC goalie Marko Jovanovic pitched his second straight shutout while making three saves.
The AWC men will next be in action on Wednesday at Phoenix College with a start time of 6pm at the Ross Mofford Sports Complex. Stay tuned to Arizona Western College Matadors Athletics for updates as they come in on Wednesday evening on our Facebook and Twitter pages.
