YUMA, AZ – It was announced on Sunday afternoon at the Region 1/ACCAC Conference meeting that two Matador soccer players were named to the All-Region first team and three Matadors were named to the second team.
Julio Castillo and Arturo Valle were the two Matadors chosen for the first team, while Eti Tavares, Fernando Alvarez and Jaime Verdin were all named to the second team.
Castillo finished the regular season with four goals and give assists while playing in 18 games and starting in 17 of them. Valle led the team with a whopping 36 points as he tallied 16 goals and four assists in 18 games appeared in.
The second team was led by sophomore forward Eti Tavares who totaled five goals and 12 assists in his 20 games of action. Fernando Alvarez started in 15 games for the Matadors this season and played in a total of 16 games while scoring five times and recording three assists for a total of 13 points on the season. Jaime Verdin also earned a spot on the second team list with a pair of goals and three assists to go along with his seven points.
The Matadors will now lean on their 15 sophomores as they enter the Region 1 playoffs as the number four seed.
The AWC men open up the Region 1 playoffs later today (Monday) against the Glendale Gauchos with a start time of 6pm at the AWC Soccer Field. Tickets are still available and only cost $5. The winner of Monday’s game will advance on to face the Phoenix College Bears on Wednesday in Phoenix.
