Oct. 28th, 2013

YUMA, AZ – It was announced on Sunday afternoon at the Region1/ACCAC Conference meeting that two Lady Matador soccer players were named to the All-Region first and second teams. Freshman midfielder Greta Espinoza was named to the 1st Team, while fellow freshman midfielder Paola Espino was named to the 2nd Team.
With the 2013 season being the Lady Matadors first year in existence, the team was put on probation and was unable to compete in the ACCAC this season; however the team and its players can still win awards within the region.
Espinoza finished her freshman regular season with 10 goals in 16 games and nine assists. She ranked second on the team in goals, five behind Sara Rodriguez with 15 and was tied for the team lead with Paola Espino with nine assists.
Espino finished her season with nine goals and the aforementioned nine assists in 17 games played. Espino ranked third on the team with a total of 27 points, two behind Greta Espinoza with 29 and six behind the team leader Sara Rodriguez who finished with a team best 33 points.
The AWC women will open up the Region 1 playoffs on Tuesday at Cochise with a start time of 3pm. Stay tuned to the Arizona Western College Matadors Athletics website, as well as our Facebook and Twitter pages for up to the second updates.
