Oct. 23rd, 2013

YUMA, AZ – The 12th ranked Arizona Western College Lady Matadors volleyball team swept dominated the Scottsdale Artichokes 3-0 Wednesday evening in ACCAC action inside of “The House.” Final scores were 25-16, 25-19, and 28-26.

With the win, the 12th ranked AWC Lady Matadors improve to 15-3 overall and 11-2 in ACCAC play. With the loss, Scottsdale falls to 17-5 on the season and 8-5 in ACCAC play.

The Lady Matadors had no rust once so ever, as they came out and dominated Scottsdale to start the match Wednesday evening. Arizona Western hadn’t played in a week, but you couldn’t tell the way the Lady Matadors struck the ball in the first game. AWC came out victorious 25-16 in the first set and kept the momentum going in the second.

In game two, the Lady Matadors were led by Amber Graham who smashed the ball all over the Scottsdale defense. Graham ended her night with 11 kills and 17 digs. AWC ended up winning the second set 25-19.

The third set was a different story, Arizona Western continued to put points on the board but Scottsdale got things going too. The Artichokes led or were tied for most of the third set. A late rally by the Lady Matadors pushed AWC over the edge as they defeated Scottsdale 28-26 to complete the sweep.

“We played exceptionally well in games one and two. We lost a little focus in game three, but we give a lot of credit to Scottsdale, they are a very good team. I’m very happy to get another 3-0 win,” said head coach Jason Smith.

AWC sported pink socks once again in support of October being Breast Cancer Awareness month.

The Lady Matadors will now head out on the road to face the Yavapai RoughRiders this Friday. This will be the third match between the two teams this season, with each squads win coming on the road. The match is scheduled to start at 7pm this Friday October, 25th on the campus of Yavapai Community College.
