AWC Sweeps Pima

Oct. 16th, 2013

YUMA, AZ – The 13th ranked Arizona Western College Lady Matadors volleyball team swept past the Pima Aztecs 3-0 Wednesday night in ACCAC action inside of “The House.” Final scores were 25-18, 26-24, and 25-17.

With the win, the 13th ranked AWC Lady Matadors improve to 14-3 overall and 10-2 in ACCAC play. With the loss, Pima falls to 13-11 on the season and 4-8 in ACCAC play.

The Lady Matadors controlled the first set from the opening serve. AWC led 16-4 at the second timeout of the first set. Pima started scoring some points out of that timeout, but the Lady Matadors held court and won 25-18.

The second set was a close one throughout and very different from what the Lady Mats saw in the previous game. Pima came out ready to play and battled the entire time. AWC was led by their normal trio of Amber Graham, Maria del mar Guzman Franco and Abbie Noland on their way to a close 26-24 victory.

Noland led all scorers Wednesday with 14 kills and 14 digs.

Arizona Western closed things out in the third set in front of their home fans by a final of 25-17. Gabriel Dias had a few big serves and even bigger smashes in the third game to propel the Lady Matadors to a clean sweep victory.

"It was a little sloppy at times tonight but overall we played very well.  Pima played good defense and served the ball pretty well against us.  We met all six of the goals that we set for ourselves tonight so I am very happy with a 3-0 win," said head coach Jason Smith.

AWC once again sported pink socks in support of October being Breast Cancer Awareness month.

The 13th ranked Lady Matadors will take a week off, before returning to the court inside of “The House” to face the Scottsdale Fighting Artichokes. The match is scheduled for Wednesday October 23rd with a start time of 7pm on the campus of Arizona Western College.
