YUMA, AZ – The Arizona Western College Lady Matadors soccer team defeated South Mountain Community College Saturday afternoon by a final of 9-0 on Homecoming at the AWC Soccer Field.
With the victory, the Lady Matadors improve to 13-3-1 overall on the season. With the loss, South Mountain drops to 0-16 overall and 0-14 in ACCAC play.
The Lady Matadors got off to a quick start Saturday; just nine minutes into the match Brandy Martinez found the back of the net to give AWC an early 1-0 advantage.
Later in the first half, the Lady Mats would receive insurance goals from both Sarai Evans and Kristian Sanford to take a 3-0 lead into halftime.
The second half was a completely different story as AWC scored, scored, and scored some more. The Lady Matadors scored six times in the second half and were led by Elisa Espino who tallied two goals and two assists.
“We really opened it up in that second half. South Mountain was tired and we had fresh legs,” said head coach Kenny Dale.
The AWC women will next be in action on Thursday at 1pm when the Lady Matadors hit the road to take on Paradise Valley. The women will get things started at 1pm followed by the men at 3:30pm.
