YUMA, AZ – It was a physical game from the get-go, but the 19th ranked Arizona Western College Matadors did not let it faze their game as they defeated Chandler-Gilbert by a final of 5-3 Thursday evening at the AWC Soccer Field.
With the win, the Matadors improve to 12-4-1 overall and 11-4-1 in ACCAC play. With the loss, Chandler-Gilbert drops to 7-8-1 overall and 7-8-1 in ACCAC play.
With starting goaltender Marko Jovanovic out due to a one game suspension because of his red card Tuesday, the Matadors had the backs to the wall from the get-go.
Insert back-up goaltender Landy Atienza and things turned out just fine. After one half of play, the Matadors led by one goal.
In the second half, the physical play broke out with each team being assessed three yellow cards. Scoring wise, it went back-and-forth in the second half, but AWC held the scoring edge at 3-2 in the second half.
AWC was paced by Jordan Evans who had what was considered the game winning goal and two assists.
“I was pleased with the result tonight. At times we made things more complicated then it needed to be, but that is because some guys only get involved in one area,” said head coach Kenny Dale.
The AWC men will next be in action on Saturday at 2:30pm when the Matadors welcome the South Mountain Cougars to town. The women will get things started at 12 noon followed by the men at 2:30pm.
