YUMA, AZ – The Arizona Western College Lady Matadors scored two quick goals on Tuesday evening on their way to a 5-0 shutout of the GateWay Community College Geckos.
With the victory, the Lady Matadors improve to 12-3 on the season and are riding a season best seven game winning streak. With the loss, GateWay falls to 1-13-2 overall and 1-12-1 in ACCAC play.
The Lady Matadors came out in a fury Tuesday evening as they struck for the first goal just 12:30 in to the match with a goal from Ariana Carmona, which was assisted by Greta Espinoza.
Espinoza ended her evening with a pair of goals and the one assist.
Greta’s first goal came just three and a half minutes after Carmona’s goal. That goal would be the final one for AWC in the first half, taking a 2-0 lead into halftime.
In the second half, goals by Samantha Alvarado, the second goal from Greta Espinoza and a goal from Jeannette Carbajal would put the game out of reach for GateWay and give AWC a 5-0 victory.
Goalies Carolyn Sosa and Fabiola Sandoval would combine on the shutout for the Lady Matadors.
“It was nice to get a result. We played well in the second half and got to get a lot of people into the game,” said head coach Kenny Dale.
The AWC women will next be in action on Thursday at 4:30pm when the Lady Matadors welcome the Chandler-Gilbert Coyotes to town. The women will get things started at 4:30pm followed by the men at 7pm.
