YUMA, AZ – The Arizona Western College Matadors struck for four first half goals on their way to a 6-0 shutout victory over the GateWay College Geckos.
With the win, AWC improves to 11-4-1 overall and 10-4-1 in ACCAC play. With the loss, Gateway falls to 0-15 overall and 0-15 in ACCAC play.
Fernando Alvarez got the scoring going on Tuesday evening with a goal just eight minutes and 53 seconds into the match. About five minutes later, Andrew Reveles would tack on a goal assisted by Lupe Paz.
The Matadors struck for two more goals within five minutes of Reveles’ goal to claim a 4-0 lead at the half.
In the second half, Cisco Ramirez and Angel Fernandez both tacked on goals to make the final score 6-0.
Starting goaltender Marko Jovanovic was solid between the pipes before receiving a red card and a game misconduct in the second half. Hunter Fitzharris came in on relief and helped combine with Jovanovic for the shutout.
“It was nice to get the result tonight, quality could have been better, but we will take the result,” said head coach Kenny Dale.
The AWC men will next be in action on Thursday at 7pm when the Matadors welcome the Chandler-Gilbert Coyotes to town. The women will get things started at 4:30pm followed by the men at 7pm.
