Oct. 4th, 2013

YUMA, AZ – The 14th ranked Arizona Western College Volleyball team had a bit of a scare in the third set by the Eastern Arizona Gila Monsters before striking for six straight points to seal the 3-0 victory over Eastern Arizona at “The House” in Yuma Friday evening. Final scores were 25-16, 25-23, and 25-23.
With the win, the 14th ranked AWC Lady Matadors improve to 13-2 overall and 9-1 in ACCAC play. With the loss, Eastern Arizona College drops to 12-8 on the season and 5-4 in ACCAC play.
In the first set of the evening, the Lady Matadors came out in a fury with strong smashes from Amber Graham, Abbie Noland and Gabriel Dias. AWC would take the first set with ease by a final of 25-16.
The Lady Matadors looked to build off the first set in the second game and came out with a nice start before falling behind. It became a back and forth battle until another AWC rally leading to a 25-23 victory.
Eastern Arizona woke up in the third set and got off to a six point lead more than midway through the set. AWC head coach Jason Smith used a timeout and it worked as his team rattled off seven straight to take a one point advantage. In the end, the Lady Matadors would win the set 25-23 and the match 3-0.
“It is always good to beat a division 1 conference foe in three! Our focus and energy was outstanding to begin the match but we didn’t revisit that level of play until the end of the match.  I am very proud of my girls tonight and we know what we have to work on to try to match that result next Friday,” said head coach Jason Smith.
AWC sported pink socks and headbands in support of October being Breast Cancer Awareness month.
The Lady Mats will take a week off, before taking on these same Lady Gila Monsters, but this time at Eastern Arizona. The match in Thatcher is scheduled for Friday October 11th with a start time of 7pm on the campus of Eastern Arizona College.
