YUMA, AZ – The 14th ranked Arizona Western College Volleyball team came out ready to play, then became a little sluggish in game three before toasting Mesa on their way to a 3-1 victory at “The House” in Yuma Wednesday evening. Final scores were 25-10, 25-13, 21-25, and 25-14.
With the win, the 14th ranked AWC Lady Matadors improve to 12-2 overall and 8-1 in ACCAC play. With the loss, Mesa Community College drops to 3-11 on the season and 1-8 in ACCAC play.
The first set Wednesday evening was a quick one for the Lady Matadors as they controlled the tempo of play. Once again the heavy hitters of Amber Graham, Abbie Noland and reigning ACCAC player of the week Maria del mar Guzman Franco led the charge for AWC.
The second set went about the same as the first, but the Lady Matadors would fall into some trouble in the third.
AWC trailed throughout and tried to mount a comeback but fell short as the dropped the third set 21-25 to Mesa.
“We started very strong which was great to see since it was a top goal for the match. We lost a lot of focus in game 3 so it was good to close out strong in game 4,” said head coach Jason Smith.
The Lady Matadors gained control right back by coming out firing in the fourth set enroute to a 25-14 victory.
AWC was led by Abbie Noland with 13 kills, Rachel Rutherford with 18 digs and Gabi Dias with five aces.
The Lady Mats will stay in Yuma as they prepare for another home match this Friday October 4th. AWC will welcome in their rivals, the Eastern Arizona Lady Gila Monsters for the second time this season to “The House,” with the match scheduled to begin at 7pm.
