YUMA, ARIZONA – The 14th ranked Arizona Western College Volleyball team had their hands full in the first game, but settled in for a 3-0 victory over South Mountain College at “The House” in Yuma Wednesday evening. Final scores were 26-24, 25-16, and 25-13.
With the win, the 14th ranked AWC Lady Matadors improve to 10-2 overall and 6-1 in ACCAC play. With the loss, South Mountain College drops to 10-7 on the season and 3-3 in ACCAC play.
The first set was a highly tested one as each team battled hard for every point. It was back-and-forth until the very end when the Lady Mats were able to score twice and win 26-24.
The second and third games were a lot easier for AWC as they won in convincing fashion, 25-16 and 25-13.
“We were not at our sharpest tonight but we got a 3-0 victory.  Once we get them into the win column we keep ‘em,” said head coach Jason Smith.
The Lady Matadors were led by Amber Graham and Abbie Noland who had 12 and 11 kills respectively.
Jocelyn Heredia Rodriguez and Rachael Rutherford led AWC in digs Wednesday night with 13 and 11 each.
Following tonight’s game, the Lady Matadors will hit the road to face the Yavapai RoughRiders on Friday night up in Prescott. The match is scheduled to begin at 7pm. The Lady Mats will return home on Friday October 4, when they host Eastern Arizona at 7pm inside of “The House.”
