YUMA, ARIZONA – The 14th ranked Arizona Western College Volleyball team came out firing and never stopped in their 3-0 defeat of Imperial Valley College at “The House” in Yuma Wednesday evening. Final scores were 25-9, 25-17, and 25-11.
With the win, the 14th ranked AWC Lady Matadors improve to 9-2 overall and remain 5-1 in ACCAC play. With the loss, Imperial Valley College drops to 1-5 on the season.
Following a long weekend at the Scottsdale Classic, this is just what the Lady Matadors needed; some home cooking. AWC came out firing from the beginning thanks to Maria del mar Guzman Franco, Abbie Noland and Taylor Price. The trio swarmed the ball in the first set leading the Lady Matadors to a 25-9 win.
In game two things got a bit closer as Imperial Valley was able to capitalize on a few mistakes from the Lady Mats. However Jason Smith’s crew settled in and came out victorious once again at 25-17.
“As long as we stayed focused, we were good. However we were only focused for 60% of the match. I am happy we have the weekend off so these players can rest mentally,” said head coach Jason Smith.
The third set seemed to be over before it began. AWC came out striking to close out the match in style with a 25-11 victory over Imperial Valley.
The Lady Matadors will now take a well-deserved week off, after playing six matches in the last eight days.
Up next for the Lady Matadors is a two game roadtrip beginning a week from tonight, Wednesday September 25 when AWC travels to Phoenix to face South Mountain Community College at 7pm. The roadtrip will conclude Friday with a match in Prescott against Yavapai College, which will also begin at 7pm. The Lady Mats return home October 4 to host Eastern Arizona at 7pm inside of “The House.”
