YUMA, ARIZONA – The Arizona Western College Matadors men’s soccer team ended in a draw in their home opener with the Glendale Gauchos 2-2 Thursday evening in Yuma.
With the tie, the Matadors sit at 0-1-1 overall and 0-1-1 in ACCAC play. With the tie, Glendale sits at 0-1-1 overall and 0-1-1 in ACCAC play.
AWC got on the board in a hurry, just 40 seconds into the match Arturo Valle received a pass from Eti Tavares which he buried into the back of the net for the game’s first goal.
Glendale responded at the 35 minute mark to tie the game at one off of the foot of Zoo Htoo. Htoo’s goal was assisted by Jacob Gerdes.
Jordan Evan’s quickly marched down the field a few minutes later and got the Matador’s the lead right back with a goal at the 39 minute mark, which was assisted by Eti Tavares.
Tavares finished the game with two assists and seemed to be around the ball all night long.
Early in the second half, Glendale got a quick goal from Gilbran Michel that proved to be the decider. Michel’s goal was assisted by Prince Gbeadeh.
After 90 minutes of play, both teams were even at two goals apiece so overtime was needed. Both teams had a few scoring chances but no one was able to convert. In the end, both teams ended with their first draw of the season.
Up next for the Matadors is a four game roadtrip beginning this Saturday at Mesa. The match is scheduled for 7pm.
