Matadors’ Football Claims Season Opening Victory
Derek Diesner
Aug. 26th, 2013

Yuma, Arizona – The Arizona Western College Football team got off to a fast start and continued the pace throughout the evening as they toppled over Pima College by a final of 40-7 in the 2013 season opener for both squads.

With the victory, the 11th ranked AWC Matadors improve to 1-0 overall and 1-0 in Western States Football League play. With the loss, Pima College drops to 0-1 overall and 0-1 in WSFL play.

The Matadors got on the board early Saturday evening with two first quarter rushing touchdowns. The first came from the legs of redshirt-freshman Marcus Horne.

On AWC’s second offensive possession, tailback Brandon Gainer led the rushing attack in for his first score of the season.

Benjamin Mauro got the starting nod at quarterback with freshman Cid Camanse Stevens getting the nod in the second quarter. Mauro took control of the Matador offense in the third quarter following some struggles from the young Camanse Stevens.

In the fourth quarter, third string quarterback Tyler Rogers came in and scored a rushing touchdown in his second series of the night.

Two players that made an instant impact for the Matadors’ were redshirt freshman receiver Javon Williams and safety Myrick Gwynn. Williams scored a touchdown in the second half for AWC while Gwynn caused havoc all night in the opposition’s backfield.

Up next for the Matadors is a roadtrip to Scottsdale, Arizona to face the Fighting Artichokes. Scottsdale enters the contest with a 0-1 record after falling to Eastern Arizona College earlier Saturday evening. Kickoff is slated for 7pm on August 31 and broadcast information is TBD.
