Womenís first-ever schedule, web page unveiled; 2012 Menís ACCAC Co-Champs open at home August 22nd

Yuma, Arizona Ė July 24, 2013 -- Arizona Western College is proud to announce that the 2013 AWC Menís & Womenís Soccer schedules have been released. In addition, the Lady Matadorsí Womenís Soccer web page has been unveiled on the AWC Athletics website. The Lady Matadors-who were officially announced as an addition to the athletic program in late February and made their first student-athlete signings in April-will make their historic debut to lead off the first of 10 menís-womenís doubleheader home matches on August 22nd, and will play a 19-match inaugural schedule in 2013. Meanwhile, their male counterparts-who wrapped up a share of their 2nd ACCAC Regular Season title in the last 3 years last October-will host ten Matador home matches and travel to eleven road contests as part of their 21-game regular season schedule. The schedule was released just two weeks before the start of preseason soccer camp for both teams.

While the two teams will play two of their first three matches at the friendly confines of the brand-new AWC Soccer Field (located directly east of ĎThe Houseí-AWCís home gymnasium-on the AWC main campus), much of their home schedule will happen in the second half of the season. The Matadors will be home for the first two Thursdays of the regular season for doubleheaders against Scottsdale on August 22nd and Glendale on August 29th, but will then only play two more home matches before the end of September (hosting Paradise Valley on September 12th and Phoenix on September 28th). The final month of the regular season, however, will be jam-packed with important home matches, including a season-long four-match homestand against Mesa (October 5th), Gateway (October 8th), Chandler-Gilbert (October 10th) and South Mountain (as part of Homecoming Day October 12th). The regular season will also wind up at home with AWCís biggest nemeses on the menís side: Pima on October 19th and defending Region I Champion Yavapai on October 24th. Preceding that final regular season menís match on October 24th, the womenís team will host the Cochise Lady Apaches, the team that AWC Menís & Womenís Head Soccer Coach Kenny Dale coached prior to his arrival at AWC in 2005.

The road side of the Matadorsí schedules begins at Phoenix College for the road opener on August 24th, and that will be the first of five straight Phoenix-area opponents on the road schedule, since their next road matches are part of a four-match road trip-all in the Valley of the Sun (at Mesa August 31st, Gateway September 4th, Chandler-Gilbert September 7th and South Mountain September 10th). The latter half of Septemberís road schedule shows the only differences in the menís and womenís schedules, since after both face Pima in Tucson for a doubleheader on September 14th, the women will break away for a single match in Douglas against Cochise on September 18th, then have ten days off. Meanwhile, the men will travel to Prescott on September 19th for a Region I Finals rematch against Yavapai before heading to California for their only non-conference match of the season at Imperial Valley College on September 21st, and then resuming conference play with a single road match at Scottsdale on September 26th. The two teams will then resume their doubleheader schedule for the remainder of the season. The final two road doubleheaders will happen at Glendale on October 3rd, and at Paradise Valley on October 17th.

All of the Lady Matadorsí matches for the 2013 season will be non-conference affairs, but per NJCAA rules, they will be eligible to compete in the Region I Womenís Tournament in late October. The Lady Matadors will then officially become a full-fledged member of the ACCAC conference schedule in 2014. More information about schedules, coaching bios, recent stories, downloads and links about the AWC Womenís Soccer team can now be found on the Lady Matadorsí page on the AWC Athletics website. Meanwhile, the men will play their normal 20-game conference schedule (10 home, 10 road) along with the non-conference match at IVC. For all 2013 doubleheaders, the women will play their match first, followed by the men, and home matches will begin with the Lady Matadorsí kickoff at 4:30PM, with the men to follow at 7PM. The lone exceptions to those home match times will be on September 12th (game times 5PM & 7:30PM) and on October 12th (Noon & 2:30PM on Homecoming Day). All Matador Soccer home matches will be held at the brand-new AWC Soccer Field (2020 South Avenue 8E in Yuma), and admission to all regular season home soccer matches is as follows: $5 for adults; $3 for seniors, military personnel (with a valid military ID) and kids ages 12-17; and free for MAA Members, AWC Students and NAU-Yuma Students..
