MATADORS NEWS & ANNOUNCEMENTS

Matadors’ 2013 volleyball schedule released

Jul. 3rd, 2013

Defending Region I Champions’ eight-match home schedule commences August 28th vs. Pima

Yuma, Arizona – July 3, 2013 -- Arizona Western College has announced that the 2013 AWC Volleyball schedule has been released. The announcement happens just six weeks before the 2013 Lady Matadors hit the volleyball court for their first preseason practices of the season, and just two months before the team begins their defense of the Region I Championship they won last October.

There is much more balance to the 2013 schedule than last year’s version, where the majority of the home dates of their schedule were basically crammed into a pair of two-week spans. Fortunately for the Lady Matadors, though, just like in 2012, the team will play much of the stretch run in front of their home fans. The lights at ‘The House’-AWC’s home gymnasium-will go up for the first time on Wednesday, August 28th, to commence the 2013 campaign as the Lady Matadors host Chandler-Gilbert Community College. The team’s first road contest will take them to the Phoenix area two nights later for a showdown against last year’s ACCAC Regular Season Champions, the Glendale Lady Gauchos. The Lady Mats will then spend the first two weeks of September getting acquainted with all of their Division I rivals in the conference as they’ll host the team they vanquished in last year’s Region I Finals, Eastern Arizona College, on Wednesday, September 4th; play back-to-back road matches on Friday night, and Saturday afternoon, September 6th & 7th in Coolidge against Central Arizona College; then wind up the four-match stretch hosting Yavapai College on Wednesday, September 11th at ‘The House’.

After spending the next week playing non-conference matches at the Scottsdale Volleyball Classic and then at home against Imperial Valley College on Wednesday, September 18th, it’s conference play the rest of the season. A two-match road trip at South Mountain (September 25th) & against Yavapai in Prescott (September 27th) will finish out the month of September, then the Lady Mats will play back-to-back Friday night matches against Eastern Arizona in Yuma (October 4th) and then in Thatcher (October 11th). The final three Wednesdays of the regular season will all be spent at home against Pima Community College (October 16th), Scottsdale Community College (October 23rd) and Central Arizona (October 30th, the regular season home finale); and the final pair of Friday nights will be spent away from Yuma (at Yavapai on October 25th, and the regular season finale at defending Region I Division II Champion Phoenix College on November 1st. All Lady Mats’ home games will be at ‘The House’ (2020 South Avenue 8E in Yuma), and all home matches will start at 7PM.

The Lady Matadors will be shooting for their 2nd straight Region I Championship (and 4th since 2006) in the Region I Division Championship Game, which will be played Wednesday, November 6th, at a site and time to be determined.
