2012 El Toro Bowl Champs to host Eastern Arizona, NMMI as part of revamped WSFL schedule

Yuma, Arizona – June 26, 2013 -- Arizona Western College has announced that the 2013 AWC Football schedule has been released, featuring five home games and four road games as part of a revamped regular season schedule. The Matadors’ regular season schedule will now open with Western States Football League play immediately in late August, and end in mid-October to accommodate the WSFL’s new playoff format beginning in late October. The schedule was released a little over a month before the start of preseason football drills at the college, and a little less than seven months since the Matadors won their first postseason bowl game in 40 years, defeating Nassau Community College in the 2012 El Toro Bowl last December in Yuma.

Last month, the WSFL decided to follow the lead of many of the other top conferences & regions in NJCAA Football and develop a playoff system to determine a true WSFL Champion. Because of that, the league has kept the same eight-game league schedule that they’ve had in the past, but have moved it up to the start of the season instead of waiting until mid-September for it to begin. As a result, the Matadors’ season opener will also be their WSFL opener as they host the Pima Aztecs at the friendly confines of Veterans Memorial Stadium-AWC’s home stadium-on Saturday night, August 24th, That will also be the first of four home games that the Matadors will play in the first five weeks of their schedule. After making their first road trip of the season on Saturday, August 31st to face Scottsdale Community College, the Matadors will be at ‘The Vet’ for a three-game homestand, beginning Saturday, September 7th, against archrival Eastern Arizona College. They’ll then face Phoenix College (September 14th) and then their lone non-conference opponent of the season, Everett JC Football from the state of Washington (September 21st) in successive weeks in Yuma.

From then on, the Matadors will see nothing but league opponents. They’ll also spend three of their last four weeks of regular season on the road, starting with back-to-back trips to the Phoenix area to face 2012 Valley of the Sun Bowl participants Mesa Community College (September 28th) and Glendale Community College (October 5th). The Matadors then will return home for what will not only be the culmination of Homecoming Week on the AWC campus (with the 9th Annual Matador Football Homecoming Luncheon at Outback Steakhouse, and a men’s-women’s home soccer doubleheader preceding the football game that day) but also their regular season home finale on Saturday night, October 12th, when they host the Broncos of New Mexico Military Institute. All home games will be held at Veterans Memorial Stadium-which is just ¼ mile west of the AWC campus on 24th Street near Araby Road in Yuma. The final game of the regular season schedule will be the perennial showdown that has decided the WSFL Champion in each of the last four seasons as the Matadors make the trip from Yuma to Ephraim, Utah, to square off against defending WSFL Champion Snow College on Saturday, October 19th. With the exception of the noon start in Utah, every other Matador matchup (home and road) will be a 7PM kickoff. After the regular season, the Matadors will play at least one game in the WSFL Playoff Tournament, which will run from October 26th through November 9th.

Every Matador Football game-including playoffs-will once again be broadcast on the radio (SportsRadio 560 KBLU in Yuma) & internet audio ( & legs of the Matador Sports Network. All 5 Matador Football home games will again be broadcast live on the television leg of the Matador Sports Network by AWC TV (Time-Warner Cable Channel 74), and AWC TV’s signal will be video streamed on the Matador Sports Network page on the Matador Athletics website ( as well as via the Ustream app, which is available on IPhone, IPad, Android, and Windows Phone (it can also be seen on Google TV and Boxee set-top boxes).
