Lady Matadors commence annual tournament against Western Nevada at 10AM at AWC SB Field

Yuma, Arizona – January 29, 2013 -- Arizona Western College is proud to announce that the annual Great Western Shootout will begin at 10AM this Thursday, January 31st, and will continue through Saturday afternoon, February 2nd. The 3-day tournament will take place at the AWC Softball Field on the AWC campus (2020 South Avenue 8E in Yuma) and Joe Henry Park (North 23rd Avenue & West Colorado Street (near 1st Street & Avenue B) in Yuma). The AWC Lady Matadors will kick off the tournament Thursday morning and play a total of eight games before the tournament concludes.

Among this year’s nine-team tournament field, there are five teams who reached their region semifinal rounds in 2012, two that made the championship game, and one that not only won their region but wound up finishing 2nd in the nation for the second consecutive season. Besides the host Lady Matadors-who are striving this season for their fourth Region I Semifinals appearance in five years, the tourney will feature: the current top-ranked team in the nation, 2012 NJCAA National Championship Runner-Up Salt Lake Community College; the team they defeated in the Region XVIII Championship a year ago, 13th-ranked College of Southern Idaho; Region V Semifinalist El Paso Community College from Texas; and the Matadors’ ACCAC archrivals from Thatcher, 2012 Region I Semifinalist Eastern Arizona College. Joining those teams in the three-day event is fellow ACCAC rival Mesa Community College; a pair of teams from the Silver State who both made last year’s Region XVIII Playoffs, Western Nevada College and the College of Southern Nevada; and perennial California representative Golden West College.

The tournament officially commences Thursday at 10AM at both the AWC Softball Field and Joe Henry Park. The Lady Matadors will spend the first two days of the tournament at their home field playing Western Nevada, Southern Nevada, Salt Lake and Southern Idaho over six games. While that’s going on, both of Joe Henry Park’s softball fields will be busy with five games on Thursday (start times are 10AM, noon and 2:30PM) and seven more on Friday (starting at 9AM and running throughout the day). Saturday’s action will be held exclusively at Joe Henry Park with a pair of games at 8AM, 10AM & noon (with the Lady Matadors playing games in the last two time slots). Admission to the tournament is just $5 per day (at each venue), and the single admission fee allows fans to see every game at that venue during that day.
