8th Annual Wells Fargo Basketball Classic takes center stage this Friday and Saturday at ‘The House’

Yuma, Arizona – November 21, 2012 -- Arizona Western College is proud to announce that it will host the 8th Annual Wells Fargo Holiday Basketball Classic this coming Friday and Saturday, November 23rd and 24th, 2012, at ‘The House’ on the AWC campus. Wells Fargo Bank is sponsoring the two-day event that will feature four top women’s basketball programs from 2 different states and an international squad to go along with four top men’s basketball programs from three different states. Both of AWC’s basketball teams will be the main attractions of the tournament, and will play in their usual time slots of 5:30PM and 7:30PM each night. The action will start at 1:30PM both days, and will continue throughout each day.

The men’s side of the WFC schedule features three teams that all made their respective postseason tournaments last year-with two of them reaching the region championship game. After making their 14th consecutive Region I Playoff appearance a year ago, the host Matadors-under 2nd-year head coach Charles Harral-have already begun defense in the Region I Division I Championship they won last March with winsin their first two conference games of the 2012-13 season. Their first competition of this weekend’s tournament will be a team that reached the Region XIII Semifinals a year ago in Lake Region State College from Devils Lake, North Dakota. The Royals won 18 games last season, and have already gotten out of the gates quickly with 5 wins in 2012-13. Meanwhile, the Matadors will be concentrating hard on getting a win in their second game of the tournament Saturday as they’ll host the Broncos of New Mexico Military Institute from Roswell, New Mexico. These two teams have already faced each other once-at NMMI’s Bronco Classic last weekend-with the Broncos getting a 65-64 victory over AWC with a 3-point bomb at the buzzer. The Broncos-who have already played four games against teams from the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference (AWC’s home conference) so far this season, will play their 5th game in that category to open up tournament play Friday against Phoenix College. The Bears, who capped off another 20-win season last March with their 8th consecutive appearance in the Region I Division II Finals, come to Yuma for their final non-conference tune-ups before beginning conference play next week, and will battle NMMI at 3:30PM on Friday before taking on Lake Region State in their tournament finale at the same time on Saturday. The Matadors will actually finish off the tournament action with their showdown against NMMI at 7:30PM on Saturday.

The women’s side of the schedule will sport an international flair. The AWC Lady Matadors-fresh off their fourth consecutive appearance in the Region I Division I Finals last March-have picked up where they left off, winning _ of their first 7 games this season. The 21st-ranked Lady Mats will tip off their first action of the tournament Friday night at 5:30PM by hosting the Lady Royals’ basketball team from Lake Region State College. Like the Matadors, the Lady Royals are picking on the momentum they gained by reaching the Region XIII Finals a year ago by sporting a perfect 5-0 record as they enter play Friday. The other women’s game on Friday actually commences the tournament itself, with the hottest team in ACCAC Women’s Basketball so far this season, the Lady Apaches from Cochise College, taking on the team from Mexicali, Baja California, Mexico: CETYS Universidad, at 1:30PM Friday. Action will begin at 1:30PM Saturday with Cochise College taking on Lake Region State College, and the Lady Mats will then close out the women’s side of the tournament schedule at 5:30PM Saturday night against CETYS.

All 8 games will be played at ‘The House’ on the AWC Campus, and admission prices are as follows: $5 admission for adults, $3 for military personnel (with valid military ID), seniors and students ages 12-17, and free for AWC students, NAU-Yuma students, Matador Athletic Association members and kids under the age of 12. These prices are for each day’s action, meaning that it is a one-time fee to see every game that day (in other words, adults can watch all 8 games for $10).
