Men’s and women’s basketball’s trip to Tohono O’odham tips off 44-game broadcast schedule

Yuma, Arizona – November 13, 2012 -- Arizona Western College is proud to announce that Wednesday’s AWC Men’s/Women’s Basketball doubleheader at Tohono O’odham Community College will be broadcast live on the Matador Sports Network, thus commencing the 2012-2013 basketball broadcast schedule. It will be the first of 22 men’s-women’s basketball doubleheaders that MATSN will provide Matador fans before the Region I Playoffs hit in late February and early March. It will also be the second year that the broadcasts will be available to view and/or listen to in four different ways.

The broadcast continues to signal the dedication by the Matador Sports Network, Matador Athletics, AWC TV Services and Arizona Western College to respond to the inquiries by the public to expand broadcast coverage of Matador Athletics. MATSN has broadcast extensive coverage of Matador Football and Matador Men’s and Women’s Basketball for more than a decade. For the past eight years during the fall, MATSN has broadcast AWC Football’s full schedule on radio and internet audio, and their entire home schedule on television; along with a selected Matador Soccer and Volleyball match. This will be the eighth consecutive winter that MATSN will broadcast all 22 men’s-women’s basketball conference doubleheaders on radio and internet audio, and much of their 11-date home doubleheader schedule on TV. The basketball broadcast schedule will also be followed for the fifth straight year this coming spring with a selected Matador Baseball and Matador Softball doubleheader to be determined at a later date. This is also the second year that MATSN has provided Matador fans with AWC TV’s signal on the internet via the UStream app on IPhone, IPad, IPod, Android and Windows phone, as well as on the Matador Sports Network page on the AWC Athletics website.

Wednesday’s broadcast will catch up with the Lady Matadors’ Basketball team after they used the momentum of earning the #17 national ranking in the NJCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Preseason Poll to win four of their first five games of the season. They’ll take that 4-1 overall record into what will be a non-conference matchup against the Lady Jegos’ first-year basketball program in 2012-13, but will become a game that will count in the ACCAC Standings a year from now. The Lady Matadors and Lady Jegos will tip off at 5:30PM from Baboquivari High School Gymnasium in Topawa, Arizona. After they finish off their game, the men’s Matadors will officially begin their defense of their 2012 Region I Division I Championship as they take a 2-2 overall record into their contest with their newest conference rival from TOCC. The Matadors’ early-season schedule has consisted of nothing but stern tests against four teams from Region XVIII (the conference that the Matadors and their fellow ACCAC teams must face each March in the NJCAA District I Finals for the right to advance to the NJCAA Tournament), and they’ll be primed to get their conference season off to a good start against the Jegos, who played an independent schedule against NJCAA opponents in their first year of existence last season to prepare for being a Division II conference opponent of the Matadors in 2012-13. Both games will be broadcast live on radio by Yuma’s news/talk powerhouse SportsRadio 560 KBLU, which is in the midst of its fourteenth year broadcasting AWC Athletics. Meanwhile, the AWC Athletics website ( and KBLU’s internet site, will simulcast the basketball broadcasts as well as all of the Matadors’ game broadcasts for the 2012-13 athletic season. The radio/internet audio broadcast will begin Wednesday at 5PM with the Lady Matador Basketball Pre-Game Show, with the familiar Matador Sports Network voice of play-by-play man Jim Howell-the ‘Voice of the Matadors’ calling both games, with color commentator (and AWC Women’s Head Basketball Coach) Patrick Cunningham providing commentary for the men’s basketball broadcast.
AWC TV will also continue its outstanding coverage of Matador Athletics on Time-Warner Cable Channel 74, beginning on Wednesday, January 2nd with the Matadors’ basketball doubleheader against Central Arizona College , with AWC TV’s signal video-streamed via UStream on the Matador Sports Network page on the AWC Athletics website ( It can also be viewed live on mobile devices via the Ustream app, which is available on IPhone, IPad, Android, and Windows Phone (it can also be seen on Google TV and Boxee set-top boxes) by searching “AWC TV”.
