Problems with court conditions stop AWC-Yavapai match in middle of play
Yuma, Arizona – October 5, 2012 -- Arizona Western College has announced that tonight’s ACCAC Volleyball match between the AWC Lady Matadors and the Yavapai Lady Roughriders at Walraven Gym in Prescott was stopped and subsequently postponed. Officials stopped play during the first set of the match after a powdery substance was thrown into the air early in the set from students in the stands, and the substance eventually dispersed throughout the gymnasium. The substance landed on different parts of the floor, making the playing surface extremely slick. Play was initially stopped and then later allowed to continue. However, after extensive attempts to fully remove the substance from the court were unsuccessful, the coaches and athletic directors from the two teams decided to stop the match in the middle of the second set, and reschedule it at a future date still to be determined.
The Lady Matadors now continue their current road trip in just a matter of hours as they are in Phoenix this afternoon for a matinee matchup against the Cougars of South Mountain Community College. First serve is scheduled for 2PM at SMCC. The Lady Matadors’ next home match is scheduled for Friday night, October 19th, as they host Division I rival Central Arizona College at ‘The House’ on the AWC campus (2020 South Avenue 8E in Yuma. The match’s first serve is scheduled for 7PM, and ticket prices to the match are as follows: $5 for adults; $3 for seniors, military personnel (with a valid military ID) and kids ages 12-17; and free for MAA Members, AWC Students and NAU-Yuma Students.
