Derek Diesner
Jul. 29th, 2014

YUMA, AZ – Arizona Western College head softball coach Nikki Bethurum announced today that four sophomores and a freshman from last year’s ACCAC championship team have signed their letter of intents to play this upcoming season at 4-year schools.
“We are very proud of these student-athletes who are moving on continue their schoolwork and softball career at the 4-year level,” said AWC head softball coach Nikki Bethurum. “It takes a ton of hard work and dedication both in the classroom and on the softball field to have this opportunity!”
The five players are infielders Summer Ehrig, Bethany Olea and Robyn Alvara, outfielder Samantha Mendoza, and pitcher Hayley Miller.
Ehrig (Yuma, AZ) signed to play softball at Dominican University in San Rafael, California, after hitting .425 at the plate for the Lady Matadors in her sophomore season with 13 homeruns and 42 RBI’s. Fellow infielder Robyn Alvara signed with California State University in San Marcos after closing out her time at AWC with a .368 batting average; to go along with a team best 22 homeruns and a team best 78 RBI’s in her sophomore campaign.
Freshman utility infielder Bethany Olea signed with the University of Montana; who will begin their inaugural softball season this upcoming spring. Olea spent her freshman season in the leadoff spot hitting a team best .464 at the plate with eight homeruns and 63 RBI’s. Outfielder Samantha Mendoza signed with the University of Incarnate Word in San Antonio Texas after batting .331 in the nine hole for the Lady Mats this past season.
Starting pitcher Hayley Miller signed with the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs. Miller closed out her sophomore year with record of 21-5 and an ERA of 2.45.
“This year’s group of student-athletes were very outgoing and were very involved with finding the school that fit their needs the best,” said AWC head coach Nikki Bethurum. “Summer, Robyn, Sam, Hayley, and Bethany all deserve this opportunity and we hope they continue to succeed at the next level.”
The Lady Matador softball team set records left and right in 2014, finishing with an overall record of 49-9; after going 39-5 in ACCAC play. The Lady Mats were both regular season and postseason ACCAC/Region 1 Champions. AWC earned a berth to the NJCAA National Tournament in St. George, Utah that saw the team go 1-2.
Nikki Bethurum and her 2014-2015 squad will take to the diamond for the first time in mid-September to start their fall scrimmage schedule.
