NJCAA Announces Academic Awards
Jun. 24th, 2014
YUMA, AZ – The National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) announced their 2013-2014 NJCAA Academic Awards for both individuals and teams on Tuesday morning. On those respective lists, three Arizona Western College teams were chosen, as were five individuals.
“I am very proud of our teams and these select individuals who earned these honors today,” said AWC Athletic Director Jerry Smith. “It’s always great to see our athletes succeed on the playing field, but we preach the importance of a good education here at Arizona Western College, so these academic awards mean so much more to me than any athletic award and I would hope our student-athletes feel the same.”
On the lists released Tuesday, the three AWC teams that were honored were the Volleyball team led by head coach Jason Smith, who earned a team grade point average (GPA) of 3.59; which ranked third in the nation out of all volleyball teams. The Lady Matador softball team earned a cumulative 3.06 GPA, while the Matador men’s basketball team earned a cumulative GPA of 3.02.
“Once again I am very pleased with the effort my ladies have put into their academic achievements,” said AWC Head Volleyball Coach Jason Smith. “Being a part of a team that achieves Academic All-American status along with conference, region and district championships is very gratifying.”
Among the individuals that were selected from AWC, were men’s soccer players Julio Castillo and Williams Ozuna. Castillo earned Exemplary Academic Achievement status with his 3.6 GPA, while Ozuna earned Superior Academic Achievement status with his 3.91 GPA.
From the Lady Matador basketball team, Jacy Pagala earned Exemplary Academic Achievement status with her 3.72 GPA.
Finally, from the Lady Matador volleyball team, Taylor Price earned Exemplary Academic Achievement Status with her 3.79 GPA and teammate Rachel Rutherford earned Superior Academic Achievement status with her 3.88 GPA.
“I am especially exultant with Taylor and Rachel being singled out by the NJCAA for their academic achievements,” said AWC Volleyball Head Coach Jason Smith.
The offseason is quickly coming to a close at Arizona Western College, as the football team will return to campus in the coming weeks for training camp. Stay tuned to Matador Athletics for constant updates on the upcoming 2014-2015 athletic seasons.
