Lady Matadors Move Up To 3rd In The Nation
Apr. 2nd, 2014
YUMA, AZ – The Lady Matadors softball team remains on a tear as they have won nine straight games and 18 out of their last 19. Because of this amazing play, AWC has been rewarded, as they moved up two spots to third in the nation in the most recent NJCAA Top 20 National Poll.
Arizona Western currently sits at 32-4 overall and 26-2 in ACCAC play and remains in first place after their sweep of Scottsdale Community College on Tuesday afternoon in Scottsdale.
Last week, AWC began the week on the road at GateWay against the Lady Geckos. The Lady Mats came out strong and won both games in run-rule fashion in five innings by finals of 15-1 and 15-2. Last Saturday, AWC remained on the road in Chandler, and defeated the Lady Coyotes by finals of 14-1 in five innings and 9-4.
“We are pleasantly surprised by this movement in the rankings,” said AWC Head Coach Nikki Bethurum. “It’s nice to get this honor for the team and hopefully we can continue with this great play as we come down the final stretch of our regular season.
Eastern Arizona dropped a spot in the poll from #8 to #9 with an overall record at 29-6. Eastern and Arizona Western are still the lone representatives in the NJCAA Top 20 National Poll from the ACCAC.
The Lady Matadors will look to continue their winning ways, when they return to action next Tuesday on the road at Mesa Community College. When Mesa traveled to Arizona Western back on February 22nd, the Lady Mats came out victorious in both contests by finals of 10-2 and 9-1. AWC originally had Yavapai on the schedule for this Friday April 4th, however Yavapai shutdown their program for this year a day before the season began due to a lack of interest.
